Palantir AI System Enlisted by FAA to Reduce Airport Close Calls and Runway Incursions

The Federal Aviation Administration has brought in Palantir Technologies to deploy artificial intelligence across the National Airspace System. The goal: spot runway incursion patterns and close calls before they become fatal. It’s a direct response to the March 22, 2026 LaGuardia collision that killed both pilots and marked the first fatal air carrier accident in the United States in over a decade.

The partnership was quietly developed over the past 18 months before becoming public in June 2026. It leverages Palantir’s Foundry platform to analyze surface radar data, ADS-B position feeds, historical incident databases, and real-time traffic flows all at once. Rather than replacing existing FAA systems, Foundry sits atop the agency’s fragmented data infrastructure and surfaces anomalies that correlate with runway incursion risk — patterns human analysts might miss across hundreds of thousands of daily records.

“This data has always been there,” a senior FAA official told Politico. “The problem is this data was always siloed.”

The Catalyst — LaGuardia March 22, 2026

A Jazz Aviation Mitsubishi CRJ-900 operating Air Canada Express Flight 8646 collided with a Port Authority firefighting truck at the Runway 4/Taxiway D intersection at LaGuardia Airport. The CRJ-900 was on short final at 130 feet altitude when air traffic control cleared the truck to cross the runway. After the truck acknowledged the clearance, the controller issued two stop instructions — but the truck’s speed actually increased from 10 knots to nearly 30 mph. Contact occurred at 90 knots ground speed, destroying the aircraft’s cockpit and forward galley. Both the Captain and First Officer were killed.

NTSB investigators determined the airport’s ASDE-X surface detection system could not reliably track the fire truck because it lacked a vehicle movement area transponder. The system generated no collision alert before impact.

Foundry’s Early Warning Capability

FAA Acting Administrator Chris Rocheleau didn’t mince words about the Palantir relationship. “Palantir has been a great partner for us.” In April 2026, Foundry flagged a cluster of TCAS alerts at San Francisco International Airport linked to landing procedures applied incorrectly — the first publicly confirmed instance of AI-generated pattern analysis directly triggering an operational change at a major U.S. hub. The FAA subsequently banned parallel landings until procedures were corrected.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy recently watched Foundry conduct a live demonstration “looking for hot spots across the national airspace.” The system is designed to catch conditions accumulating over weeks and months at specific airports, not the simultaneous cascading failures that caused LaGuardia.

The FAA’s own March 2026 update identified more than 150 U.S. airports with elevated surface collision risk, spanning 453 individual hot spots. Runway incursions doubled to 11 in 2023, but only three have been documented so far in 2026, with others remaining under investigation or pending addition to the FAA’s public database.

Complementary Systems in Motion

The Palantir partnership arrives alongside the FAA’s broader modernization push. In March 2026, the agency announced it would install the Runway Incursion Device (RID) at 74 airports by end of 2026 — a standardized alert system that monitors up to eight runways simultaneously and replaces outdated tower equipment. The RID is already operational at Centennial Airport in Colorado, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport in Missouri, and Portland International Airport in Oregon.

On a bigger scale, the FAA is developing SMART (Strategic Management of Airspace Routing Trajectories), an AI system extending conflict prediction from 15 minutes to two hours. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy explained the concept: “A controller will get a notice they could change one airplane’s flight path slightly and deconflict it an hour and a half or two hours before the conflict even happens.”

On May 22, 2026, the DOT and FAA launched the ATC Modernization Tracker to provide public visibility into infrastructure work nationwide. In late June, the FAA awarded Air Space Intelligence a $875 million, 12-year contract for new AI capabilities.

Controller staffing remains critical. As of April 2026, approximately 11,000 Certified Professional Controllers operate across more than 300 FAA facilities, with an additional 4,000 in the training pipeline — a hiring pace unprecedented in agency history.
