Boeing just landed an $8.6 billion Pentagon contract. The deal covers 25 advanced F-15IA fighter jets for the Israeli Air Force, with an option to build 25 more by 2035. It’s one of the largest single fighter procurement deals of 2026—and a significant shot in the arm for Boeing’s defense division.
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency awarded the contract on July 17, 2026. Approximately $840 million was obligated at the time of award. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio is administering the effort, while Boeing’s defense operations in north St. Louis County will handle production at its primary F-15 assembly line.
Technical Specifications and Operational Advantage
The F-15IA is the Israeli variant of Boeing’s latest F-15EX “Eagle II”—built specifically for what the Israeli Air Force needs. Digital fly-by-wire flight controls replace the older mechanical linkage systems entirely. Paired with large conformal fuel tanks, the aircraft achieves a ferry range of approximately 12,000 nautical miles without eating up weapons hardpoints.
The numbers tell the story: Mach 2.5 maximum speed, 4,000-kilometer combat radius, 13,381-kilogram payload capacity. The F-15IA carries 12 air-to-air and 15 air-to-ground weapon stations. It integrates Israeli-made Python 5 air-to-air missiles and Delilah cruise missiles. The APG-82(V)1 active electronically scanned array radar from Raytheon Technologies handles precision target detection for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. BAE Systems’ Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) boosts survivability in contested electromagnetic environments.
Here’s what really stands out: the F-15IA is engineered for over 20,000 flight hours of service life. That’s roughly 2.5 times the operational life of fifth-generation fighters like the F-35, meaning these jets could stay active into the 2070s. Boeing claims the platform delivers 25 percent lower operating costs per flight hour compared to earlier variants—thanks to efficient engines, digital controls, and reduced maintenance demands.
Strategic Context and Regional Operations
This builds on Israel’s November 2024 agreement to procure an initial 25 F-15IAs for $5.2 billion. Together, the two deals commit Israel to acquiring 50 new-build F-15s. These are the first new Eagles the nation has ordered since 1999, when it received the final F-15I Ra’am jets. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031, with four to six aircraft supplied annually over the following decade.
The timing reflects hard lessons learned. During Israel’s April 2024 defense against Iran’s ballistic and cruise missile attack, F-15s delivered critical air defense and strike capability alongside F-35Is. The F-15’s ability to carry large quantities of air-to-air missiles per sortie proved invaluable against drone swarms. Its extended range enables deep strikes across the Middle East—capabilities the stealthier F-35I cannot match without internal weapons-carriage limitations.
The new aircraft will modernize Israel’s oldest fighter inventory. The Israeli Air Force currently operates 66 F-15 variants, including legacy F-15A/B and F-15C/D models from the mid-1970s. These aging airframes can now be systematically retired.
“This contract provides for the design, integration, instrumentation, test, production, and delivery of 25 new F-15IA aircraft for the Israeli Air Force with an option for an additional 25 F-15IA aircraft,” the Pentagon said in its announcement.
Workforce and Industrial Impact
The award supports Boeing’s St. Louis defense industrial base. Approximately 3,300 machinists union members work across three plants there. Tom Boelling, president of the local machinists union, welcomed the contract’s workforce implications—noting that Boeing is adding a second F-15 assembly line to meet production demands.
The contract deadline is December 31, 2035. That gives nearly a decade for deliberate, quality-controlled production and Israeli integration of advanced avionics and weapons systems.
