BETA Technologies just flew the first operational electric aircraft mission under the FAA’s new eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. On July 17, 2026, it transported a genetically modified pig heart across three states—from Virginia to Maryland—marking a regulatory first in U.S. aviation history. The flight carried revenue cargo under real commercial operation before the aircraft completed full FAA type certification.
The mission used BETA’s ALIA CX300, a 50-foot-span all-electric fixed-wing aircraft (registered as N916LF). It covered approximately 275 nautical miles in three legs: Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport in Blacksburg, Virginia to Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport; then to Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland; and finally to Martin State Airport in Baltimore County. Inside was a medical containment system holding a manufactured organ from biotech firm United Therapeutics—BETA’s founding investor and strategic partner since 2017.
The eIPP operates under an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA), a legal mechanism that lets participating aircraft conduct revenue-generating missions while feeding real National Airspace System data directly into the FAA’s certification process. Unlike experimental first flights that generate only internal company data, this approach is fundamentally different. Every flight hour BETA logged on July 17 counts toward the regulatory foundation governing all future electric aviation operations.
Why the CX300, Not the eVTOL?
BETA’s ALIA line includes two variants. They share 80% common design elements: the CX300 conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) aircraft and the A250 true eVTOL with vertical takeoff capability. The company chose the fixed-wing CX300 for this inaugural mission because of its 336-nautical-mile range and ability to use existing airport infrastructure—making it better suited for near-term commercial operations. The CX300 carries a 1,235-pound payload, fully charges in under one hour, and achieves 42% lower total operating costs than comparable manned aircraft. During a recent demonstration flight, an ALIA consumed $7 in electrical power versus several hundred dollars in helicopter fuel for equivalent distance.
The aircraft features advanced carbon fiber composites and an arched twin-tail boom for structural efficiency. It’s equipped with a Garmin G3000 Prime avionics suite—marking the first electric aircraft to incorporate the system. BETA’s 188,000-square-foot net-zero manufacturing facility in Burlington, Vermont has built six aircraft to date and can scale to 300 aircraft annually.
The Mission’s Larger Significance
FAA Administrator calls the milestone evidence that “the eIPP gives us a real-world environment to safely test and integrate the next generation of aircraft into our airspace system.” Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy added: “Thanks to President Trump, the future of aviation is here—and it’s going to dramatically improve how people and products move.”
United Therapeutics CEO Martine Rothblatt, whose company aims to conduct thousands of organ delivery flights daily once manufacturing scales, emphasized the clinical urgency. “Our mission to manufacture an unlimited supply of transplantable hearts, kidneys, lungs, and livers requires this innovation,” she said. The company’s FDA-approved clinical trials for heart and kidney devices—combined with this month’s lung device approval—underscore how rapidly the organ manufacturing timeline is accelerating.
What’s Next
BETA is targeting FAA type certification for the CX300 in the second half of 2027 and certification for the eVTOL A250 in 2028. The three-year eIPP program window aims to enable passenger operations in the A250 before concluding around 2029. Pennsylvania DOT and other state partners are planning additional test flights throughout 2026. BETA was selected to participate in seven of the FAA’s eight eIPP launch programs—more than any other electric aircraft developer—signaling confidence in the company’s technology maturity and execution capability.
