The FAA officially certified the Boeing 737 MAX 7 on August 3, 2026. The approval clears the path for deliveries to begin and accelerates the regulatory pathway for the larger and more commercially significant MAX 10 variant—ending years of certification work on the smallest member of the 737 MAX family and bringing one of aerospace’s longest-running development programs to completion.
The amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record represent a watershed moment for Boeing’s narrowbody recovery. Around 30 completed MAX 7 aircraft currently sit in storage awaiting final retrofits before delivery to launch customer Southwest Airlines, which holds 269 orders—roughly 90 percent of all MAX 7 commitments globally.

Technical Approvals and Design Changes
Getting to this point required several critical safety enhancements over earlier MAX variants. Boeing redesigned the flight-control software, upgraded the flight crew alerting system, and overhauled the engine anti-ice system to prevent inlet overheating that could compromise surrounding structure. The FAA also advanced the enhanced Angle of Attack (eAoA) system, which simplifies flight-deck cues and reduces erroneous warnings.
Both the Engine Anti-Ice and eAoA systems will be introduced across all 737 MAX production aircraft moving forward. They’ll also be retrofitted to the existing in-service fleet—a significant undertaking affecting more than 2,300 delivered MAX aircraft as of June 2026.
The MAX 7 itself is purpose-built for niche applications. It seats 135 to 160 passengers and offers approximately 3,800 nautical miles of range. Powered by two CFM LEAP-1B engines, it reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by approximately 20 percent compared to aircraft it replaces, while lowering the noise footprint by about 50 percent. The airframe excels at high-altitude and hot-climate airports—exactly Southwest’s operational sweet spot as the carrier looks to retire its aging 737-700 fleet.
MAX 10 Follows on Schedule
With the MAX 7 now cleared, the FAA’s procedural framework is established for the MAX 10—the variant that matters commercially. Major carriers including Ryanair (150 firm orders), Alaska Airlines (168), United Airlines (167), and Delta Air Lines (100) are waiting for certification. Combined orders for both the MAX 7 and MAX 10 exceed 1,700 aircraft.
Boeing and the FAA completed certification flight testing for the MAX 10 on July 28. The campaign involved three test aircraft—designated 1G001, 1G002, and 1G003—which collectively logged 976 certification flights spanning more than 2,060 hours in the air and approximately 1,040 hours of ground testing. The FAA now expects MAX 10 certification in early fall 2026, with WestJet designated as launch customer.
Southwest’s CEO Bob Jordan confirmed the airline expects MAX 7 passenger operations to begin during Q1 2027, following pilot training and operational integration work. The certification also comes as Boeing targets ramping 737 MAX production to 47 aircraft per month, with plans to reach 52 per month in 2027. A fourth final assembly line opened in Everett, Washington will focus on MAX 10 production.
Regulatory Path Forward
Boeing’s extended certification program gave both the manufacturer and the FAA refined understanding of modern regulatory requirements. Mike Sinnett, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Product Strategy, noted the experience is “expected to accelerate future airplane development with a renewed emphasis on human factors, safety and quality.”
FAA safety inspectors will remain stationed at Boeing production facilities to monitor manufacturing quality and the company’s Safety Management System. The 777X wide-body program remains next in the FAA’s certification queue.
